One of the greatest things about living in a city is the endless dining options for date nights, which proved to be a bit of a problem last year - let's just say our food budget got a tad out of hand. After facing the cold hard numbers, though, we've been doing much better at eating at home and enjoying only an occasional night out. With the majority of Elliot's free time being spent in classes and doing homework now, we spent some much needed time together at the Red Feather Lounge on Saturday night.

Even though Red Feather is located right next door to our building, it has never been a place we frequent. I think the ultra-hip vibe intimidates me (just typing that made me feel like an old married woman - hah)! But I'm so glad I ventured out of my comfort zone and let Elliot talk me into dinner there, because it was delicious! I can be a harsh critic when it comes to Boise's dining options, but I can genuinely attest that Red Feather's fantastic seasonal menu is worth every bit of their hipster scene.

My order? Stuffed squash with turkey confit and a fresh baked roll.

Last weekend my sisters and I celebrated my mom's birthday with a brunch date at Bacon and a spa day! I'm glad I gave this little cafe another shot, because it really was better than I first gave it credit for. The french toast was still no match for Cafe de Paris', though!

If you haven't read my blog for any length of time, I'm going to apologize upfront. This post probably won't make a lot of sense to you, so if you take the time to read and connect with it anyway, I hope we meet someday, because we're probably long-lost besties.

About a year ago, I got really honest on this blog for the first time. I wrote this post on the concept of renewal, something I decided not only to claim, but to work towards in 2011. And so tonight I want to take another opportunity to disconnect from the blog-speak we are all so accustomed to and write something about me that is real. You know, us bloggers throw around words like "obviously," "clearly," and "delicious" a whole lot. They sound nice, and they are nice, but they don't have much depth. Bear with me?

Like last year, I didn't make any resolutions this new year, but I am really happy to say that 2011 did indeed turn out to be a year of personal renewal for me. And not in the way I expected, either. If I'm honest, I was kind of hoping that 2011 would just be an easy year; a year of developing routines and sleeping in on Saturdays. It didn't turn out to be so, but what I gained was far better.

In 2011, God blessed Elliot and I in a way that still hard for me to wrap my mind around. After taking almost all of our stability away in 2010, including stability in our finances and community, God gave it back to us ten fold in 2011. But it didn't come without some honest-to-goodness hard work. Elliot and I both put in long hours at work. On top of a full-time job, I took three upper division math courses in the spring to finish off my bachelors degree (long story). In 2011, two of my sisters got married, both of whom I planned bridal showers for. In the summer, I started freelancing (!!!), something that makes my heart sing with joy, but also makes my eyesight fuzzy from having to spend all my free time on the computer. And on top of all that, I tried really hard to make some girl friends, because let's face it, I really needed them. In 2011, I was forced to learn how to manage my time so efficiently, that even I was impressed with myself. I was busy, really busy. Sometimes I liked it, other times I hated it. Sometimes it just felt like I was spinning my wheels.

But like most hard work, it did eventually pay off. Elliot and I have both seen wonderful growth in our professional lives. In August, my diploma came in the mail. My freelance work has increased in volume, but has become more manageable for me at the same time. And I have friends. Really good ones, actually. Especially you, Jenn and Ginger. You two have been life-savers.

When I look at how far I have come in just one year, how so many of my heart-felt prayers were answered, and how many of my goals were accomplished, it becomes clear that in 2011, I was renewed.

And now it's 2012, and 2012 seems to be shaping up to what 2011 was supposed to be. I'm pursuing things that I love, but there is less pressure now. Less stress and more routine. In many way, life is winding down for me, but ramping up for Elliot. It's kind of like we're finally trading places. In fact, as I write this, he's working on homework (he started graduate school today)! I know he'll love his program, but my role for the next few years will be one of support. As he stays up late reading, programming, and eventually writing that dissertation, my job will be to make sure he has a supportive wife that takes care of the other details he longer has time for. And I am so thankful that I worked hard last year, so that I have time for that now.

My hope is that 2012 will be the year that I learn to cultivate personal peace.

This Christmas was pretty low-key for Elliot and I. We spent Christmas Eve with just the two of us for the first time. We ordered Thai take out, opened stockings, and listened to Smokey Mountain Christmas. On Christmas day, we spent the morning with my family and the afternoon with his. We really are so fortunate to live so close to both our families!

For me, the two highlights from this year was the furniture my mom reupholstered for my sisters and I. Remember my post about the ottoman? It's finally finished and gracing our living room! My mom did an incredible job - it's just gorgeous! The other highlight were the vintage Winnie the Pooh books my sister gave me for our future babies! In case you can't read the wording on that last picture, it says To my future niece or nephew, From your Aunt Lisa. Isn't that the sweetest? I loved it.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the real reason for our trip out to Texas was for a friend's wedding. Elliot was a groomsman and I helped out taking photos. I mostly just let the main photographer do her thing, but I did get the opportunity to take the photos of the boys getting ready. I'm rather pleased with how they came out - everyone looks so handsome!

Longview, and East Texas in general, really has a completely different cultural flare than the west. Often quirky, locally owned business quickly became my favorite spots. Last week Elliot and I got to spend a four days back in Texas for a friends wedding, which just so happened to be at our alma mater! It was amazing to be back in the deep south (where fall is just now in full swing!) and to see so many friends that mean the world to us. Maybe it's nerdy to admit, but we truly loved and treasure those years spent at LeTourneau, and I'm so glad we were able to go back and document our favorite places on campus. The student bookstore made a killing off of us this weekend, and until our student loans are paid back, they can consider that our donation to the university ;)

some thoughts on collections.

I've never been much of a collector. As a child, I was never interested in something long enough to collect it. Elliot had a stamp collection growing up (actually, he still has it), which is adorable, but I just can't fathom what it would be like to have an attention span long enough to look through lots of stamps. Are stamps pretty, unique, and colorful? Yes, but I would have lost interest in those suckers in about six seconds. Even as an adult, my attention span for things, even for things that I enjoy (maybe with the exception of photos), is not terribly long.

There was one thing I remember enjoying for long periods of time growing up, though: being read to. No, not reading on my own, but being read to (my poor long-suffering parents). I remember my dad reading The Chronicles of Narnia to me in a big chair, and my mother reading the Ramona Quinnby series to my sisters and I before we went to bed. Those were easily some of the greatest moments of my childhood, and I hope that one day I can give those moments to my children, as well, which is why I recently started my very first collection: children's books. I have so many favorites, so it's probably a good thing I'm starting early!

I scored the three books above at our local Goodwill for .69 each! Can you believe that? I still can't. Some others that are on my list: The Giving Tree, I'll Love You Forever, and The Polar Express.

Any others that I simply must add to my list?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Three years ago today, the first post I ever wrote for this blog was a thankful list. I remember writing it on a plane on my way home from Texas after visiting Elliot. I had just met all of Elliot’s best friends for the first time, had spent several days at the university I would eventually graduate from, and realized I had found a real catch in the man I had gone to see. I didn't have a clue then how my relationship with Elliot would turn out, or how important my very new blog would become to me, but three years later I am more thankful today then I was on that plane.

Every year since, I have written a list of the things I am most thankful for from the past twelve months. In the spirit of tradition, here is my list for 2011:

1. I am thankful that Alison Dawson Photography has thrived beyond my sincerest hopes and expectations.

2. I am thankful that Elliot was accepted to graduate school (!) and begins his masters degree in January.

3. I am thankful that Elliot and I have full-time employment. For many, I know finding work is a struggle in this economy, as it was for us just a year ago.

4. I am grateful that we work for companies and people that treat us well and look out for our best interest.

5. I am thankful that all my siblings have decided to settle here in the Boise area.

6. I am thankful that both sets of parents live close by and play an active role in our lives.

7. I am thankful for Starbucks. There, I said it.

8. I am thankful for our downtown apartment. Even though it is louder than we would like at times, making a home in the city we love has brought us joy.

9. I am thankful for a husband that is humble and quick to forgive.

10. And last, but certainly not least, I am thankful for a God who is all-powerful. There is nothing my God cannot do.

Yesterday I posted that I had a new photography website in the works, and while I have a feeling I'll never be completely satisfied with the way it looks, it's up and functional! That's half the battle, right? My new site's address is www.alisondawsonphoto.com if you would like to follow along. And while I'm on this topic, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has given me the opportunity to photograph them. I started taking pictures on a film camera my freshman year in high school and I've continued to take photos as a hobby ever since. But this summer was turning point for me. I finally started charging people for a hobby that I've been cultivating for many years. I was blown away by the response. It was as if the Lord threw open the doors and said if you really want it, come get it. So I did, and I have never seen the fruits of my labor multiply so quickly. Thank you to everyone who has spoken words of encouragement into my life, and thank you to everyone who has given me the opportunity to passionately pursue something that I love. I'm so excited to see Alison Dawson Photography grow in the coming year!

So I would like to raise a toast to my new website, not only because it was a big step for me professionally, but because it symbolizes how I have been abundantly blessed.

It took us nearly a year, but I think we have finally picked a favorite brunch spot in Boise: le cafe de paris! It's only a block away from our apartment and it has a patio that faces the capital building, which is perfect for lingering on warm summer mornings. Besides, their french toast is heavenly, which is reason enough to become regulars! And now that miss Michelle will soon be an Idaho resident (holla!), I'll definitely be planning a brunch date and blogger meet up here!

On a completely unrelated note, I've become somewhat unsatisfied with the direction my blog was starting to take. I needed a space to post my photographic work, but in the last few months, that's all this blog has been, which makes me unhappy. With that said, I have created a new website that will function exclusively as my photography site! I will be sharing that link tomorrow, so stay tuned! I'm excited for this change, especially because it will allow me to once again use this space for what it was originally intended for.

Fall is all but gone here in Boise. Our first dusting of snow is falling as I type this, but for the few short months that it lasted, fall was wonderful. We had such a long summer, which made for a shorter, but much warmer autumn season. For most of you, the changing leaves, the shorter days, and the chilly nights are nothing new, but for this California native, experiencing a true fall is still nothing short of spectacular. This is our third fall in Idaho, and I now fully understand why a change of season can mean a complete change of routine.

Here's how we celebrated fall this year:

-I exchanged my vodka tonics and greyhounds for hard cider, and Elliot switched from Fat Tires to Black Butte Porters.
-Pumpkin spice candles replaced the fresh cotton scented candles from this spring.
-Studded grey ballet flats, leather camel-colored ballet flats, Hunter wellies.
-A bowl full of fall goodness for our coffee table.
-Pumpkins and a gold Grecian vase appeared on our mantel. Inspired by this blogger, I'm hoping to change our mantel slightly each season.
-A new fall wreath decorated our door.
-Walks around our neighborhood.
-LOTS of grad school planning. We found out today that a BSU professor may be interested in doing research with Elliot!

And this weekend we're welcoming winter with a trip to McCall with these guys! What did you guys do this fall? How are you welcoming winter?

Earlier today I did a mini fashion session with my sister, Lisa, as part of a school project she's working on. Lisa's currently working on a degree in business and fashion design, so for this particular project, she had to create and market a clothing label. Her label, MEL Clothing, is a very seventies-inspired line with an earthy and natural appeal. It was such great fun to have a model to play with for the afternoon, and in the end, I think we did a great job capturing images that really reflect her line. I also payed special attention to give the post-processing a slightly vintage feel, which made the images all the more stunning.

I love being able to take a break from "normal" sessions and flex my creative mussels once in a while. For me, sessions like this are pure gold! Slowly but surely I can see my artistic vision more clearly. I'm starting to see real trends in my compositions, my preference of locations, and in my post-processing. Though I am undeniably drawn to images by great artists like Jose Villa, I find my images deviating from the traditional fine art approach more and more. My use of black and white has been one of the biggest surprises to me; while it used to scare me, it turns out that, for my personal photographic approach, I prefer a harder contrast in my black and white images! It may sound like a small thing, but I honestly believe that embracing that change has made my image collections better and more cohesive for my clients.

I have ordered a new 5D Mark ii camera body, as well as two new lenses, so if you're looking to have holiday photos taken, now is the perfect time! Zach lived in Elliot's suite one year and Faith and I got to know each other my during my senior year of college. Elliot and I were so excited when we found out that they were moving to Idaho! It's always nice to have fellow LeTourneau alumni in our neck of the woods!

You guys, I have a confession: I really need your help. Several weeks ago my mom bought me a very large and very gorgeous ottoman and, in her usual supermom way, has offered to reupholster it for me! The ottoman is the perfect addition to our living room, because it will provide comfy, but low, seating. I think the single greatest feature about our apartment are the big windows, so I don't want to distract or block what the eye is drawn to when you first walk in the door.

So back to my dilemma: I still need to pick out fabric for the ottoman. My real problem is that I have both warm and cool colors in our living room. Our color palette is: orangey-red, navy, teal, pink, grey, and various shades of neutrals. I need to decide whether to choose a fabric that has primarily warm colors or cool colors. I picked up some samples this afternoon and thought I would see what the general consensus was among my readers! Let me know what fabric you think I should go with (or what fabric you think I should definitely not choose!) in the comment section!

Here's a more complete look at the session I did with Jared and Alissa last week. I just love the various shades of blue and golden that appear throughout the entire shoot. Its sometimes a challenge to maintain cohesion throughout when there are multiple locations and sources of light (due to the time of day) involved, but I'm really pleased with how this session turned out. Congrats again to the happy couple!

One of the greatest things about living downtown is coming home to lots of restaurant options and happy hour central! One of the worst things about living downtown is how easy it is to spend lots of money in restaurants and on happy hour. So, to keep us from over-spending on eating out, I've started to do happy hour at home!

I guess it does make it more fun that I finally finished and stocked our bar cart! Our rustic cart is probably my favorite piece in our house and really brings a lot of definition to our modern-rustic style. I picked it up at a hole-in-the-wall antique store. It wasn't for sale, but after stopping in twice, I finally convinced the owner to sell it to me! I've also been collecting vintage linens since college and decided to display a few of them in a basket next to the cart. Those linens, combined with a few feminine pieces on the cart, provide such a lovely juxtaposition.

Yesterday afternoon Elliot and I left work a bit early and drove out to the St. Chapelle Winery for a tasting. I'm so glad we did, too, because the drive back that evening was particularly magnificent. Colors have just started to change here Idaho and there is still warmth in air. With views that radiant, crossing two things off my 25 before 25 list was only a bonus. It was the perfect way to send off summer and welcome fall.

I remember once when Elliot and I were engaged, I told him how much I love nautical colors and how I wanted to our home's decor to reflect a nautical palette. Looking back, though, my love for blues, reds, and neutrals has translated more to my wardrobe and accessories than to our home decor. The combo of my new J Brand jeans (from Fancy Pants!) and this navy blazer are perfect for work and translate smoothly to happy hour. Besides, it gives me an excuse to wear red lipstick every once in a while!

Over Labor Day weekend, Elliot and I made a quick getaway trip to Portland for my cousin's wedding. It was my first time there, so of course a few days didn't feel like nearly long enough to really take in the city, but we did have a blast exploring what we did have time for! Upon numerous recommendations, we had coffee at Stumptown, tried Voodo Doughnuts, and spent the better part of an afternoon in Powell's bookstore. Hanging out with my parents and all my aunts and uncles was pretty amazing, too! And the wedding was wonderful, one of the loveliest I think I've ever attended! Even my parents got out on the dance floor!

Every first Thursday of the month downtown Boise's population swells. People drive in from all over the valley, shops stay open later and serve wine and hors d'oeuvres, and art galleries don't charge admission. It's wonderful, but sadly we didn't take advantage of first Thursdays much this summer, so last week we made a point to get out and try the things in our neighborhood that had been peaking our interest. We happened upon an art auction that benefited the Idaho Humane Society and picked up a 50% coupon for an adoption! We'll see if Elliot lets me get a little pup anytime soon ;) We also managed to make it to the opening of Idaho Poster and Letterpress, as well as try The Brickyard, a brand new restaurant in town that showcases dueling pianos!

Today is a very exciting day in my little corner of the blog-o-sphere! Why, you ask? Because today I get to share with you all a wonderful project that my friend Jenn and I are collaborating on! We started brain storming several weeks ago and the all the pieces have come together so nicely that we are confident that the Lord has his hand on this. Have I peeked your interest? Read on.

The Details:

Who: Jennifer Thompson and Alison Dawson (me!)

What: A campaign to drill one well for a community in need with Charity:Water.

Why: Because we love the Lord and because he has blessed us with skills and the desire to obey his calling to meet the physical needs of others.

How:

1) -Ali will be offering photo sessions on a donation basis. One hundred percent of the funds raised will go towards the building of our well.

2) -Suggested donation is $100.

3) -Photo sessions can be whatever you want them to be! Ali loves shooting engagements, families, children, and photos for holiday cards! However, there are three rules of thumb to keep in mind: you will get one location, one outfit change, and one hour. Please note that weddings are not included for this fundraiser.

4) -You will receive a disk with the best 20-25 images from your session (portrait sessions will have 15 images). All these images will be edited.

5) -You can expect to receive your disk no later than two weeks after your session.

6) -Jenn will be responsible for the marketing, networking, and general organization of this project. All questions and coordination not involving photos should be directed through her.

Last Saturday I had the joy of taking part in Brice and Bailey's wedding. The wedding itself was held at the Shriner Temple in downtown Boise, a new-to-me venue, but for the posed pictures we walked across the street to the Boise Plaza. The day was a whirlwind, as all weddings are, but it was a total blast! And a big thanks to my bestie, Jenn, for being my second camera (and for keeping me from smashing my equipment to small bits when my diffuser decided to stop doing its job)!

Brice and Bailey, thank you so much for allowing me to capture the intimate moments of your wedding. You two are both such beautiful people, inside and out, and I blessed to now call you friends.

This Saturday we finally got around to trying Bacon, John Berryhill's new cafe. Others had warned us that it was a bit over-rated and it did get some real bummer reviews on Urbanspoon, but if John Berryhill opens a new restaurant, you have to try it at least once, right? Unfortunately, the reviewers were right; it wasn't all that much to rave about, but I did fall in love with a new breakfast food (not that I needed yet another brunch dish to crave): french toast casserole!

While my mom and I were antiquing the other day, I happened on this stunning plate and just knew I had to buy it and turn it into a cake stand when I found the perfect candle stick. Lucky for me, though, my mom found the perfect one that same day! I was a little worried I would botch this project, though, since I'm like the least crafty person alive, but considering there is literally one step involved, even I didn't mess it up too bad. There is truly nothing better on a Saturday evening than a low-key, but upscale, date night. Am I right? Especially in the summer, when all the patios are open and your favorite seasonal cocktails are back on the menu, so when Elliot asked if I wanted to go out, I jumped at the chance! I threw on my skinny jeans and put on my favorite color this summer season: coral. We originally planned on going out of town to the drive-in theater, but changed our minds last minute and headed to Fork, our favorite Boise restaurant. And rather than having to drive an hour, we only had to walk a block!

By far the most labor intensive part of photography is the editing. Tonight I had some fun experimenting in photoshop with new combinations of color layers, and I'm pretty pleased with the end result - they kind of have a down home country feel!

We may have been raised in Southern California, but it appears we've quickly adjusted to Idaho's weather. Like true locals, anything in the 90's is nearly unbearable now, so when I heard the forecast was for 100 degrees plus this weekend, I booked us a room at the lodge in McCall and we headed up to the mountains! Even though it was just for a night, we had such a relaxing time. Mini vacations are so worth it sometimes!

A few months ago when I was writing my 25 before 25 list, I knew that one of the domestic areas I lack skill and knowledge in is the kitchen, so for extra motivation I added two cooking-related items to my list. I'm happy to report that I have indeed tried a new recipe every month since April and I've even found a cooking class that I plan to enroll in through a local grocery store here in Boise! One of the best new recipes I've tried this summer is stuffed spaghetti squash, which is one of the easiest dishes out there, but so tasty and healthy. I've also been enjoying white wine this season and have been experimenting with various wine/fruit combinations. My favorite thus far? New Age white wine with strawberries.

In a nutshell, it was marvelous. We had a potluck with some awesome friends, bocchi balled, rode bikes, and of course, watched fireworks. And also, my bike! Am I right? It was Elliot's grandma's, and as a wedding gift my father-in-law refurbished it for me. He even found original vintage Schwinn stickers that had long ago worn off, and of course, I got to choose it's new color! I'm basically in love with it. I'm always asking Elliot if he wants to "cruise" now. Actually, I ask everyone if they want to cruise with me now - hah! I'm pretty sure it embarrasses Elliot when I ask our friends. Oh well, my bike is way to sweet to keep inside!

PS: I haven't picked a name for her yet. Suggestions?

Two weekends ago my husband turned 25! I could tell he was cautious about celebrating his quarter-century birthday, but I don't think 25 has ever looked better. We celebrated on Saturday with a long canoe trip up in the mountains and then we BBQ'd with family on Sunday. And that cake? Yeah, I made it. Won't you sing happy birthday along with us? I'm sure we'll hear you, wherever you are ;)

Last weekend Elliot was gone all day Saturday and Sunday at a tournament, which meant I got to spend time all. by. myself. It was the first time I've had real personal space and alone time since we got married. Maybe that sounds like an exaggeration. Maybe you can't relate. Maybe your spouse/significant other gives you lots and lots of space. Maybe you wish they gave you less space. But it's true, I haven't been away from Elliot for any length of time since June 19th of 2009.

And I need to be honest, for an introvert such as myself, I'm surprised I didn't have a neurotic episode and die after the first year of all this togetherness. What was the point of this post? Oh yes, I got time to myself. And what did I do with all this time alone? I slept, mostly. And I took pictures. And ate bagels. Which sounds a lot like my college days, to which I'm sure Amanda, Heather, and Andrea are all thinking umm yes.. [Thanks for putting up withe me, guys. And for waking me up for my classes. I owe you. And yes, you can redeem that IOU for free babysitting for the rest of my life. Elliot said it's okay.]

happy memorial day weekend!

Nothing feels better than a long weekend with nothing planned and only a small to-do list. I can't actually remember the last time I've been so free to relax and pursue things I want to pursue without the guilt that I could be doing something more productive. But, much to Elliot's displeasure, the only downside to so much leisure is that I usually wind up wearing sweats, no makeup, and never leaving the apartment unless I have to. So this weekend, I'm opting for a slightly more appropriate take on being comfortable. Sidenote: Elliot thinks that denim boy's button down is the hottest thing since sliced bread. I'm not sure I get it either, but it's one of the few things that can pry him away from his GRE study book these days. My new motto: whatever works.

This past weekend Elliot and I made our way down to Salt Lake City for our session with Matt Clayton. We had such an incredible time shooting with him! I think we actually laughed the entire time. Like, bust-a-gut laughing. It was such a wonderful experience and I can't wait to see our photos and share them with all of you!

We stayed at a great little Bed and Breakfast in the historic area of the city, took advantage of Chipotle, In-N-Out, and Chick-Fil-A (basically, all the amazing fast food that Boise doesn't have), and even hit the IKEA! And can I just say, I. love. IKEA. In fact, I think that was only time I've had to drag Elliot out of a store. He loved it so much he even let me take home some "souvenirs". Holler! My new coffee table and bookcase thank him ;)

April 29th was certainly a day of celebration around our little apartment. Not only was it my birthday, but as I'm sure all of you know, it was also the royal wedding! I have to admit that I haven't watched the wedding yet (I'm hoping Hulu will have a condensed version?), but I thought it would be fun to plan my birthday dinner outfit with the royal colors in mind. The Modcloth dress I'm sporting has been such a staple in my closet for almost two years. I wore her to my college graduation, our rehearsal dinner, and many a birthday party. She's truly a gem. And the earrings have been my go-to pair for long, long time. They were a gift from my beautiful friend, Jenna, who picked them up in NYC a while back.

Hi friends! It feels like such a long, long time since I've been a consistent blogger. I miss the creative outlet and regular documentation of the Mr. and I, but I think my lack of posting reflects my priorities during this season of life, which is good thing!

This is a special time in my family's life, because my baby sister Julie is getting married on Saturday! If you follow me on twitter, I apologize, because it's all I've been talking about lately! I'm just thrilled for her and the wonderful man she is promising her life to. I'm excited to have another sister to chat about ridiculous married-type things with!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hosting her bridal shower, which I can't wait to share pictures of, but first I wanted to write a post on the invitations, because they were one of my favorite parts about planning the shower. I knew almost immediately that I wanted to do a very classy brunch shower, and the invitations seemed important in setting the appropriate tone. I ultimately decided on these (from wedding paper divas), and later ordered the matching thank you cards as a gift to Julie. The invitations were also instrumental in deciding the theme for the shower (vintage flowers) and the color scheme (pink, white, gray, and green).

In addition to the invitations, I completely lucked out and found gorgeous vintage seed labels from papermash! I used the back of the seed seed labels to write Julie's favorite bible verse, and included one in each invitation. The finishing touch was the monarch butterfly stamps, which I initially found in a vintage stamp database, but later found out that the post office still carries them! Ha!

It hit me hard the other day, the reason why I don't make resolutions at the new year anymore. It's because plans fall apart. Not all the time, but sometimes. And sometimes they don't just fall apart loosely, sometimes they're ripped to tiny, unrecognizable shreds. And it's hard to tell when that's going to happen, you know? That's what 2010 was like for me.

2010 rode the frayed coattails of 2008 and 2009, which consisted of unusual highs and lows for me. Getting married and graduating from university were certainly a high points, but there was also a substantial amount of pain that I dealt with as a result of some poor decisions I made. And somewhere in the midst of those two years of crazy life changes, Elliot and I moved across the country (twice) and then moved up to Northern Idaho, where Elliot was offered his first engineering job. The very end of 2009 showed a lot of promise. We were adjusting to our new location and engaging a new community. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

And then it was 2010. And in 2010, from the Lord took away all those things which gave my life stability (except my husband and family). Our home, our jobs, our community, and in the months that followed, he took our savings away, too. It was really painful and I was really angry. I cried a lot. And I didn't just cry, I cried out. I cried out to the God that was supposed to protect me. I cried out to the God that supposed provide for me. And then one day, when I was so physically tired from my anger, God quietly taught me perhaps the most important lesson I will ever learn: my worship of the almighty God can not, must not, be conditional upon my circumstances. If the Lord allows me to be beaten down and left destitute, I must praise him still, because he is God and that is enough. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

In 2010 God beat a lot of ugly out of me. A lot, guys. But as exhausting as it was, now that it's over, I feel renewed. As a wife, as a sister, as a friend, and as one who worships and lives to bring glory to the great I Am. And that's mostly the point of this lengthy post: that in 2011, I'm claiming renewal. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

The good news is that 2011 has already been about 6 trillion times better than 2010. Elliot got hired full-time as an engineer with a faith-based organization, which means we've chosen to open ourselves up to the possibility of going into full-time ministry! I'm still working as a personal assistant at company that I love, with people who make my job happy and completely worthwhile. We found our dream apartment in the city (more on that later), and I even gathered enough courage to dye my hair! Surprise! We're happy right now. I don't dare presume that hard times will never come again, they will, but right now our little family is in a healthy and happy place. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

This week we:

-Went to three Christmas parties!

-[Elliot] was offered a full-time engineering job! We are so happy to be able to stay in the Treasure Valley, and are so thankful for God's continued provision in our lives.

-[I] had the most embarrassing experience of my life. We were following the hostess to our table at Berryhill & Co., and I literally fell right on my face in front of everyone. Elliot said a chorus of gasps went up all around us. I was absolutely mortified, but it is amusing to think back on. I do have a nice bruise on my knee to show for it, though.

Also, sorry the quality of pictures have been sub-par as late. I'm using my new iPod touch, but it's not so great with indoor lighting.

I remember two years ago when I started this little blog, one of the first things I blogged was a list of gratitude during the holidays. And then, almost a year ago, I blogged a thankful list at New Years, and somewhere in between, at the crux of an entirely new season in my life, I blogged this list. It's interesting to see how most of the things I'm thankful for don't change from year to year. These are the things that money can't buy, can't protect. It's my responsibility to cherish them, keep them safe, make them last.

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for:

-My sister's engagement, and the wedding and bridal shower planning that come with it!

-All the wonderful small business that thrive here in Boise.

-The genuine and involved interest our parents take in our little newlywed life. And yes, Dad, you are a blog-stalker.

-My husband's very broad spectrum of interests and talents. I swear he introduces me to a new hobby every week.

-For Bethany. After 15+ years, you are still one of my closest friends.

-For Andrea. Even though you are far away, I value your friendship more than almost anything else.

Until my last few classes are over, I've decided to resign myself to weekly recaps instead of regular posting. I can't wait until these courses are over, Elliot starts working full time, and we can just dream a little bigger and breathe a little easier again. We've been in limbo for almost a year now, and it's getting old. Sometimes, the stress puts me in haze and I lose perspective. But really, I can be a bear to live with when my unrealistic expectations rear their ugly head. I'm so thankful for a God that is gracious, a husband that is patient, and a big family that brings me back to reality and keeps me humble.

This week, we:

-Said goodbye to all the beautiful fall leaves, and welcomed the winter's first snow.

-Began decorating for Christmas.

-Ate gingerbread cake and played vintage clue.

-Finished our Christmas card.

-Had my first fender-bender, and yes, it was my fault :(

-Made new friends.

I never thought I would say this, but I'm anxious for winter this year. We've finally spent enough winters in Idaho to be legitimate skiers, and you know, being on the mountain is one of the hobbies Elliot and I enjoy doing together. We picked up some new gear at the ski swap last weekend, so now we just cross our fingers and wait for snow. I'm getting impatient, but in the meantime, we're enjoying the last of fall. We took one last drive yesterday to say goodbye to the leaves, goodbye to the golden.

It's getting chilly in Boise. As in, our first snowfall is due in tomorrow, but Elliot and I loved fall this year, loved the leaves changing colors, loved watching the corn grow tall, and loved taking long drives out to Williamson Orchards for fresh apple cider.

This weeks joie de vivre list is from one of my close friends from high school. I almost cried when I read her list; it's always so good to hear when a friend is doing well and their marriage is strong.

Crystal's own joie de vivre:

1. Quiet weekend mornings in the pool with my husband.

2. The look on my family's faces when I come down the escalator at the airport.

3. The few and far-between times when our puppy falls asleep on my lap.

4. Celebrating with my family. Even after meeting people across the country, my family still facilitates the most interesting conversations.

5. When Ben realizes how good he is at what he does--I tell him all the time, but when he realizes it, it's priceless.

I love little surprises. You know, the unexpected delights that almost feel like a gift. While walking around downtown Nampa this past weekend, I happened upon just such a surprise! Brass Razoo is a marvelous little boutique tucked away in the most unexpected of places. It carries an eclectic array of clothing and jewelry that are appropriate for work, but transition seamlessly into evening. In fact, Brass Razoo was even given a nod in the latest issue of Lucky Magazine!

And it gets better, Brass Razoo just expanded their inventory to include furniture! It's evident that all the pieces in the boutique were given considerable thought and attention. Even though many of the furniture items were up-cycled, they look as if they belong in the same collection. I even had the privilege of meeting the lovely lady that helped launch the new store, Kristen Grove, an interior designer who also has a lovely blog, by the way.

Happy Monday, dear readers! I'm so glad you decided to read this post, because I have two very special things to share with you today! First, one of my favorite bloggers, Michelle of Oh, Mishka, has launched a new blog called Might&Main! However, this is not just a new side project for her. Michelle has committed to this new endeavour whole-heartedly, and plans to make her livlihood from writing this blog. It's a bold step to really chase one's dreams, and that's why she deserves our support and encouragement! Her list is so special to me, because I have not been able to spend nearly as much time with her as I would have liked. Oh! and the picture she sent along is from Brazil, on the path where she does all her running! Such a stud.

Guess who had a birthday on Saturday? Yup, my handsome husband! I made him a special (and by special, I mean large) breakfast, he went over to a friend's house to watch the world cup game, and in the evening we had friends and family over for a BBQ. Nothing too spectacular, but it was neat to have a day to especially celebrate Elliot. Last year, we were leaving for Hawaii on his birthday, so you know, it kinda got lost.

Happy last birthday this side of a quarter century, babe!

P.S. - We're house sitting right now, and lucked out with a sweet view of some pasture land! It's so peaceful, and it never even smells!

As amazing and relaxing as our anniversary weekend in McCall was, I neglected to take very many photos. In fact, these may or may not be some of the only photos that were taken. I didn't forget our camera, I was just so enthralled with Elliot's new iphone, that I spent most of my time checking out the camera on that gadget!

Even though there are no pictures to prove it, we took a drive around the lake (and saw a baby deer!), went biking, ate lots of seafood and sushi, and spent Sunday morning having devotions in a lovely little cafe called the Fogg Lifter.

I know it's already Wednesday, but what did you lovely women do this weekend?

Yup, that's right, one year later my mom pulled the top of our wedding cake out of their freezer and insisted that we eat it to celebrate our anniversary. Elliot was right, it did taste like freezer, but on the upside I finally found out what our wedding cake/cupcake flavors were: raspberry and white chocolate. Our wedding day was so busy, I didn't even pay attention!

P.S. - That first picture is terribly deceptive; I promise Elliot has fantastic table manners!

Dear Elliot,

Happy one year anniversary! One year ago on this day we got dressed up, exchanged vows in front of our dearest community, and had our wedding night.

But we both know that was not the best, most crucial part. The most important effort has been the living out of the commitments we made that day; the many prayers that God would keep us faithful to one another, the daily effort to keep our communication open, meet the other person's needs, and remember that, no matter what, "I do" will always mean "I will." Marriage is meant to be a life-long journey, an institution we esteem with the utmost respect.

I thank the Lord for the provision and grace He has shown us this year and for the grace He gave each of us for the other. Together, we have both experienced five of the six most stressful life adjustments in just our first year as husband and wife: graduating from university, getting married, a big move (hey, we did two of these!), starting a new job, getting laid off, and quite frankly, those were only the big adjustments. This year was hard - really hard at times - but it was never hard because I regretted marrying you.

Elliot, I respect and adore you because you are the spiritual leader in our family, the provider, protector, and brains behind this operation. You are literally one of the smartest men I know, and could have one of the truly current and progressive careers for our time, but you value what I want to accomplish in life, too, and make decisions about our future accordingly. For this I am eternally grateful.

Elliot, I have loved you since the day you showed up at my house for the Fourth of July almost nine years ago. Do you remember when we made eye contact waiting for the fireworks to start? I wasn't even in high school yet.

Elliot, you are the light of my life and I would still follow you to the far, bright stars.

It is important, I think, to reflect on the joy of living, one's very own joie de vivre. It is for this that wishes are made, come true. For this we labor, we wait.
